Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti marks the birthday of the tenth guru of Sikhism who was born on 11th November 1666 in Patna, Bihar. According to Hindu Bikrami calendar his birthday falls in January, November or December & sometimes twice a year. His birthday is celebrated as a religious festival in Sikh community.
Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti is celebrated with great pomp and show by the Sikh community. Like all guru purabs or the birthday commemoration of the Sikh guru on this very day, the Akhand Panth or the non-stop reading is organized for 48 hours or two days that culminates on the birthday. One day earlier to this particular day, a grand procession is held which is led by the five beloveds & palanquin that carry the holy book Guru Granth Sahib. The route to the parade is adorned with flags, flowers as well as banners and gatka teams & people sing hymns accompany the parade. On the day of birthday, festivities begin as early as 4’O clock in the morning with the singing of Asa-di-var as well as hymns from the holy book Guru Granth Sahib. On this very day kirtan darbars & katha or speech is held in Gurudwaras. Langar or community lunch is also served in all gurudwaras after the distribution of Karah Prasad or the sweet pudding. The birthday of Guru Gobind Singh Ji is celebrated with great religious gaiety by the people who pay visit to the gurudwaras to offer their prayers.
