Mamallapuram dance festival is an event that includes the Indian classical dance forms such as Kuchipudi, Bharat Natyam, Kathak & Kathakali. The dance performances are held against the awe-inspiring milieu of the Pallava Rock Sculpture in the city of Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram), Tamil Nadu. The Pallava Rock Sculptures give an aesthetic touch to this cultural festival where the best of folk dancers perform. The mass assembled here gets a visual treat by the outstanding performances of Indian folk dancers where they perform by cuddling in beautiful traditional attire portraying the rich cultural heritage of India. The dance festival goes on for 4 weeks.
The open-air auditorium that is set for the venue of this dance festival was founded around thirteen centuries ago. It served as the port of the great Pallavas & a resort as well as culture front to well-off culture. The dance performances are held in Arjuna Penance, which is a brass relief formation based on two adjoining rocks. When the dancers carry out their danced performances, the atmosphere is such that the rock shudders with reverberation of the music.
