National Youth day is observed in India on January 12 on the birthday of Swami Vivekananda. The Government of India declared the day as the National Youth Day in 1984 and since then it has been rejoiced in India every year. According to the official statement from the Government of India- It was felt that the philosophy of Swami Vivekananda & the ideals for which he lived as well as worked could be an ultimate source of inspiration for the youth of India.

Celebrations and Activities:
Swami Vivekananda’s birthday is observed in different centers of Ramakrishna Math & Missions in a customary Hindu manner that includes mangalarati (a sort of worship practiced in India, mainly by Hindu community), special worship, fire ritual, devotional songs, meditation, religious discourses & sanshya-arati.

The National Youth Day is celebrated all over India at colleges and schools with speeches, processions, youth conventions, music, recitations, seminars, presentations, yogasanas, competitions in essay writing, recitation as well as sports of January 12 every year.

The lecture and, writings of Swami Vivekananda, deriving their motivation from Indian spiritual custom and the broad viewpoint of his Master Sri Ramakrishna, serve as a source of inspiration & have inspired numerous youth organizations, service projects and study circles involving the youth.

On that particular day, various people take part in several activities organized in various parts of India which promote youth in the domain of education, art, culture as well as hope to cultivate moral values with advancement and enlightenment of inner soul.

National Youth Festival in India is an annual get-together of young people. The celebration involves cultural activities of both non-competitive and competitive genre.
